‘Your Name’ Breaks Japanese TV Ratings Records

Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) continues to set records as it steamrolled its way to become the most watched TV broadcast movie.
TV Asahi revealed that Your Name earned a 26.3% combined real-time and time-shift viewer rating. The Video Research Company began tracking time-shift viewings (viewing within 7 days of real-time airing) in October 2016. The previous record holders were Frozen and Shin Godzilla.
Your Name had a 17.4% real-time rating, which is also a new record. Shin Godzilla was the previous record holder when it earned 15.2% on November 12, 2017. The movie was aired on TV without any cuts but did feature a shorter ending movie that was edited by Shinkai specifically for the broadcast.
Shinkai’s Your Name has become a smash-hit since it debuted in theaters on August 26, 2016. It’s the fourth highest-grossing Japanese movie of all-time and the highest-grossing anime of all-time at the global box office. Your Name has earned an estimated 39.46 billion yen ($355.30 million) at the global box office according to Box Office Mojo.
